The adult Jean Grey is finally back in X-Men: Red #1, and she’s bringing a surprise guest with her. Along with Jean’s new mission, the X-Men’s next big foe is revealed in this inaugural issue of writer Tom Taylor and artist Mahmud Asrar’s new X-team title.
Spoilers ahead for X-Men: Red #1.
X-Men: Red #1 kicks off with the newly-resurrected adult Jean Grey leading her new team in rescuing a young mutant from a mob of anti-mutant activists. Nightcrawler teleports the team and the rescued child back to their new base - Searebro - and underwater headquarters.
Flashing back a few months, we witness the beginnings of the team - a similar situation where Wolverine, Honey Badger, and Jean rescue a baby who manifests sonic screaming powers leading to a high profile incident that reignites anti-mutant fervor.
Recognizing the need for a better path to Xavier’s dream of humans and mutants co-existing, Jean consults numerous world leaders - including T’Challa and Namor - leading her to devise a plan to have mutantkind recognized as a sovereign population by the United Nations. T’Challa and Namor each back Jean’s plan on behalf of Wakanda and Atlantis respectively, leading to Jean’s proposal passing despite some opposition.
Outside, Jean confronts the ambassador from the United Kingdom, who offered the most outspoken opposition to Jean’s plan. The ambassador privately expresses support for the mutants before her demeanor abruptly changes - and her nose begins to bleed.
The ambassador begins speaking cryptically about Jean not being able to stand against “true power,” as Jean detects a presence in her mind. As Jean reaches out, the ambassador’s head explodes. Namor rushes to Jean’s aid as U.N. guards open fire, and Nightcrawler teleports them to a remote location.
As they leave the scene, it’s revealed that the presence in the ambassador’s mind was none other than Cassandra Nova, who promises to make the X-Men “see red.”
The story continues in X-Men: Red #2, on shelves March 7.
